Was She Sick of the Fees on US Airways?

Laura Northrup of The Consumerist writes about a woman who allegedly wrote that when her sister-in-law was gravely ill in California, her husband booked an expensive last-minute flight on US Airways to bring her back to New Jersey — but unless he paid an extra $15.00 “choice seating” fee per person, US Airways could not guarantee that he and his sister would be able to sit together on the flight.

Should ancillary fees be charged regardless of the circumstances, or would that be considered cold, cruel and unfair in certain situations?
