Seattle-based Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air both began charging most passengers $20 to check a first bag, an increase from $15, according to an article published by The Seattle Times. The airlines will reduce the prices they had been charging to check a second and third bag.
Passengers checking one, two or three bags will pay a flat rate of $20 per bag — $5 less than previously charged for the second bag and a $30 decrease for the third. While that is a substantial discount on the second and third checked bags and certainly makes it easier to predict how much one expects to pay for more than one checked bag, one has to check the first bag first and pay the increased fee before realizing the savings on the second and third checked bag fees.
The changes went into effect as of Wednesday, June 16, 2010.
